Despite the terrible Wenzhou train disaster that ensued a mere three weeks after the opening, the year 2011 still is remembered chez moi as the year of the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Rail. This was a railway line, and indeed, an event that, to me, was the second most important thing of the year — after getting married to my darling, Tracy Liu (which was the number one event of 2011).

The Beijing to Shanghai HSR has major stops in five key cities in northern and eastern China: Beijing, Tianjin, Ji’nan, Nanjing and Shanghai. This is a big thing to me as I’ve friends in the media, educational, and arts worlds — and all folks I’ve met both on Twitter and in the real world — in every single one of these metropolises. How cool can getting off the train and meeting a pal that very city be!?

There was vast media coverage of the very first trip that both me and Tracy took. Train G1 departed Beijing South at 15:00 on 30 June 2011. Onboard was both me and Tracy, but also quite unforgettably, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao. Mr Wen sure had a busy schedule ahead, but he was kind enough to take a quick moment to chat to us. We loved the entire trip.

Before this, I had taken already 32,475.33 km of railways (the great majority of which were in mainland China) and completed 207 rail travel legs since high speed services began in China with the Beijing-Tianjin intercity HSR on 1 August 2008. This had already clearly established me as one of the major train folks in China. Chinese trains had taken me to Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and further out, to Hong Kong, Taipei and Kaohsiung.

This inaugural debut on the Beijing-Shanghai HSR earnt both me and Tracy, one of China’s most HSR new families and world rail travellers at heart, international media attention. Government media (Chinese Central TV), regional media (including the free-leaning Southern Metropolis Daily), local media (the Metropolitan Women Daily from Ji’nan landed us front page coverage!) and overseas media (including media from Hong Kong, Europe and the Americas) ran either pictures of me (and Tracy) or my reports or interviews. On the online world, CNNgo spread the word that I’d be livetweeting the event in a report just before the HSR line opened. Shanghai-based Asian TV host Steven Weathers, Lanzhou-based language professor Lonnie Hodge, and Chinese next-gen online photo site Diandian.com, amongst others, all linked to my live coverage or collaborated with me in my live tweeting from the train.

雖然在京滬高鐵開通三個多星期後,發生了令人震驚和十分痛苦的溫州動車撞車事故,但是對於我來說,2011 年依然是京滬高鐵之年。對我來說,京滬高鐵的開通,是 2011 年僅次於和我的老婆 Tracy(劉乃嘉)結婚的特大喜事

京滬高速鐵路全線經過七個省市,五大始發車站位於北京(南站)、天津(西站)、濟南(西站)、南京(南站)和上海(虹橋站)。恰好,我在京、津、濟、寧、滬五大城市都認識來自媒體、教育、藝術等各界朋友,而且我們不僅在網路上交流過,甚至於合作過,也在線下實際見過面。坐高鐵,在五大城市下車,即可會友,真是件大好事啊!

我們所乘搭的列車是由北京南始發的頭版列車(G1 次列車)。2011 年 6 月 30 日 15 時整,列車準時從北京南站 1 站台始發。車上有我,有老婆,但是也有特別來賓 — 中國總理溫家寶先生。溫先生雖然很忙,但是很榮幸可以和我們短暫交流。這趟旅途,終身難忘,真是期盼已久的一次旅途。這裡說「我們喜歡這趟旅途的每一分,每一秒」,毫不誇張。

在登上京滬高鐵頭班車前,從 2008 年 8 月 1 日中國第一條高速高鐵京津城際開通以來,我已乘搭 32,475.33 公里鐵路旅客列車,絕大部分在中國大陸境內完成,乘車次數高達 207 次。這已經讓我成為新浪所認證之「高鐵達人」。乘搭列車,我已去過北京、天津、石家莊、青島、上海、南京、杭州、成都、武漢、廣州、深圳,還有香港、臺北及高雄。

登上京滬高鐵頭班車,我和 Tracy 組成之中國高鐵常客家庭得到國內外媒體關注。中國大陸官方媒體(如中國中央電視台)、區域性媒體(如較為「自由」之《南方都市報》)、地方媒體(如濟南《都市女報》)及來自香港、歐洲及每週之海外媒體,都以各種方式,或採訪我們,或直接將我們圖片與報導載入網路。在網上,CNNgo 在高鐵開通前就為我做了「預告」,邀請人們「圍觀」我在臉譜網、推特及新浪微博要做的現場直播。居滬亞洲媒體主持人史宗靈(Steven Weathers)、居住在蘭州的美籍語言教授宋志(Lonnie Hodge)、新一代圖片微博網站點點網等,也與我進行各種推廣或合作。

    At 15:00 on 30 June, the first trains on the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway will leave Beijing South Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. David Feng, a Beijing-born Swiss-Chinese, was the first “laowai” to purchase a Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail ticket. Cable News Network (CNN) from the United States said that the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway will span 7 provinces in eastern China, which has a quarter of China’s population and 40% of the nation’s GDP. David Feng broadcasted live his journey via Facebook, Twitter and Sina Weibo.
    6 月 30 日 15 時,京滬高鐵分別從北京南站和上海虹橋站對發出首趟列車。在北京出生的瑞士人馮琰成為第一個購買上海到北京高鐵車票的「老外」。報道這一消息的美國有線電視新聞網(CNN)當天說,京滬高鐵跨越中國東部 7 個省市,這裡有中國 1/4 人口和佔全國 GDP 40% 的經濟總量。一路上,馮琰通過微博、「臉譜」和「推特」全程直播了自己的旅行。
