ENGLISH

I was totally fascinated by this crazy bit of Chinglish in 1992 — when I was still just a kid at 10. The family got me to a dinner with friends. I forgot everything — except for the unforgettable Chinglish on the comment card. It started off with this immortal bit of Chinglish: “WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS!“…

It’s late on 14 July 2011… and let’s see… that’s 2,054 cases of Chinglish I’ve spotted since that fair bit of Chinglish. Including the unforgettable “TO TAKE NOTICE OF SAFE: THE SLIPPERY ARE VERY CRAFTY” and their Chinglish ilk like that. It got me fascinated. It got my media friends addicted. It got the Chinese Publishing House of Electronics Industry totally sold. They helped me out with a David Feng book — Jiong Chinglish (Chinese: 囧图就在你身边: 雷人 Chinglish).

Since then, I’ve stayed in the Chinglish world. Both before and after the book was published, I’ve kept on contributing to the Flickr Chinglish pool. I’m staying in this fun but also fascinating “biz”, so to speak. It’s — well, you can call it fun, but it’s also a fascinating insight into linguistics in China in things related to English.

這裡有 2003 年的經典一句:「TO TAKE NOTICE OF SAFE: THE SLIPPERY ARE VERY CRAFTY」(「要注意安全,因為滑溜溜的是很狡猾的」?),還有類似更加「雷人」的 Chinglish。
